Poking Blackie: Sick Dogs Love Acupuncture
A truly fun read. Blackie, like many rescue dogs, has been through a lot. The journey of his sudden blindness was told in “Blind Dogs and Seeing Eye Humans.” Now Blackie tells his own different story about how acupuncture saved his life from a paralyzing accident, and then helped him later fight another disease.
Blind and paralyzed, many thought Blackie’s days were over if not for his never give up defiance. We turned to acupuncture—a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine—to ease his pain and help his recovery. Through several months of acupuncture treatment, he made a near-full recovery back to a great quality of life. Later, when faced with kidney disease, acupuncture again ignited his never give up attitude.
Blackie, a rescue dog, tells his own story about how acupuncture saved him twice. He shares his challenges, emotional ups and downs, and fun times he enjoyed with his family. And when fate finally comes, Blackie enjoys reuniting with his sisters across the rainbow bridge.
Blackie’s final hope is that other owners consider acupuncture when their dogs (or cats) are facing health issues.
Poking Blackie: Sick Dogs Love Acupuncture excerpt
It was Tuesday, March 12, 2019, and I can remember it like it was yesterday. That was the day I graduated from seven months of acupuncture treatment following a paralyzing traumatic event. My best friend, Bob, even bought me a little graduation cap to wear that day. I was so proud of myself and my “never give up” attitude.
When my accident occurred on August 2, 2018, the veterinarians thought I was permanently paralyzed and suggested to Bob that he should consider putting me to sleep. Bob said, “No way!” Graduation day meant so much to me because it celebrated saving my life, which I know wouldn’t have been possible without acupuncture.
My name is Blackie and this is my story. It’s a story about how acupuncture saved my life not once, but twice. I’ll get into all of that later.

Blind Dogs & Seeing Eye Humans excerpt
Consider for a moment that it’s tomorrow morning and you’re asleep in the comfort of your bed. The sound of your smartphone alarm startles you, seeming to come way too early as it does every day. You go to reach for it in the darkness, but you can’t see it. In fact, the darkness is so still that even the little illumination that’s usually there is absent.
You search for the sound of the irritating alarm and eventually find it, then struggle as your fingers search for what yesterday seemed like an easy-to-find button that turns it off. It’s something you’ve done nearly every day and yet, this morning, it seems nearly impossible. As the sound of the alarm disappears, you blink your eyes repeatedly trying to wake up. Still nothing, not even a glimmer of light. A thought races quickly across your mind: I’m blind!
This is our rescue dog Blackie’s story (absent the smartphone). He woke up one day in November 2017 and was suddenly blind. Reality hit: It was time to rescue Blackie again.
